  1. What is SolidSense?

SolidSense is a next-generation industrial sensing platform for concrete used in the construction industry. The SolidSense node is a disposable, durable, cloud-connected device that gives an instant condition report at every stage of maturing concrete. The matching application provides precise intervention recommendations for on-site engineers.

SolidSense accurately measures concrete temperature, humidity, and evaporation. It then estimates, in real-time, both the concrete maturity and the concrete strength.

  2. How often does the SolidSense node send data to the app?

The time intervals for sending data from SolidSense nodes to Azure IOT Hub can be set by users in SolidSense settings under Maturity Calibration section. The unit for the time intervals in the application is set in minutes.

SolidSense nodes will go to sleep mode and will not use the battery during the intervals, hence the device battery life can be extended significantly. Current such devices usually have a battery life of approximately 15 days, but by setting the intervals for SolidSense nodes efficiently (for e.g. every 60 minutes), the device battery life can be increased up to 90 days.

  3. How is concrete data transferred to the SolidSense app?

Each node sends its data to Azure IOT Hub and the hub triggers an event as it receives the data. SolidSense app as a consumer of that data will receive it immediately after the IOT Hub data event is triggered. That makes this process completely online without any delays.

In addition, apart from the ability to measure and send data, SolidSense nodes can repeat the Wi-Fi signal they receive, therefore all nodes will be linked to each other and extend the Wi-Fi network to nodes that aren’t in the vicinity of the router. In this way, all nodes, even in a large scale pouring site, will have a stable connection to send their data over the internet without any loss.

  4. Does the SolidSense transmitter store the data it collects?

No. The SolidSense node does not store any data. Instead, the node immediately transmits its readings to the app.

  5. Is the SolidSense node waterproof?

Yes, the SolidSense node was designed to be both dustproof and waterproof.

  6. Where do I check the data collected from the SolidSense node?

The data from the node is presented in the app.

  7. Where does SolidSense store the data?

The data that SolidSense collects is stored in the cloud and can be instantly viewed in the web-based app.

  8. Do I have to manually collect any of the data?

No. SolidSense is a set-and-forget system. You can see the SolidSense data at any time and from anywhere from your PC, a tablet, or even on a smartphone.

  9. What happens if there is no internet coverage at the construction site?

Good internet connectivity is required for the SolidSense system to operate. Fortunately, almost all construction sites now have internet connectivity.

  10. How do I access the SolidSense software?

The SolidSense software is accessed from your browser, as it is a web application. SolidSense representatives will set up each customer with login information. SolidSense then recommends that you bookmark the link for ongoing access.

  11. Does the SolidSense system have alarms and event alerts?

Yes. SolidSense sends out alerts for a variety of different situations:

    • Concrete temperature above or below pre-defined values
    • Concrete strength exceeds a pre-defined value
    • Concrete maturity exceeds a pre-defined value
    • Data is not being received from a SolidSense node
  12. How long will the SolidSense app’s data be available to me?

Data for each pouring will be stored in the cloud and the site owner will have direct access to it through SolidSense application; although the period in which data will be available to the site owner in the application will depend on their plan and license type. Moreover, site owners can download data of each pouring as a backup from SolidSense app during the period the data is available to them.

  13. With SolidSense’s ability to provide instant concrete monitoring during a pour, does that mean it is possible to change the concrete mix?

Yes. This is one of the key benefits of the SolidSense system.

  14. How much does the SolidSense system cost?

The price depends on the amount of equipment you will need. The SolidSense pricing is based on unit pricing per node and a charge per month for online platform access, advanced analytics, cross-site tracking, and permissions.
